Baby Unicorn

WOW! Today has been a day. Most of our weekdays consist of the same routine – school for Emmie, work for Mommy & Daddy, and then back home for dinner/bath/bed/etc… But today, was fully of SO MUCH stuff. We had seven “additional things” on the docket today, so let’s jump in! (I also feel so cheesy saying stuff like that, but then somehow I also can’t stop myself, sooo…)

We did a few pictures at home first, since we didn’t go straight to school. She didn’t dress up for Halloween for the entire day, but I did pick an outfit that she could wear under her costume, so we could slip it on & off with no issues. These cute unicorn & dino pants have been in her drawer for a while, as has this shirt. My boss Tammy actually got her this shirt from Powell’s Books, which is like a really awesome, giant, kinda famous book shop out in Portland. (Actually, I just looked it up, and it says it’s the largest independent bookstore in the world, which is super impressive!)

Would you just look at how curly & beautiful these little golden locks were this morning!?

And then we headed out to our our first “thing” of the day – the pediatric dentist. When I called yesterday to make the appointment, they told me everyone in the office would be in costume. So I decided Emmie could wear hers to the appointment too, and she was excited about. And look at the world’s cutest baby unicorn!! This is the costume she picked out herself when we went to TJ Maxx last weekend, and I’d say she did a good job!

She did a good job sitting in the dentist’s chair like a big girl. She was a little scared and had a tight grip on both of my hands, so I couldn’t get a photo (but I really wanted to, since the whole office staff were Toy Story characters and the dentist was a super cute Jesse complete with wig, hat & outfit), but she did well. Basically, the tooth is “bruised,” and that’s why it’s discolored, but the dentist said there’s a slight possibility the bruise will fade away over time, and the tooth will turn back to white/yellow/clear, whatever color you want to call it…

But because she was a big girl, she got to choose from a little selection of prizes. She was only supposed to get one, but she couldn’t decide, and instead of having her throw a giant toddler temper tantrum, she got both the cat-ears headband, and the little pink bug toy thing. They also had a table full of treats & cookies, so she got one donut hole too.

She then got mad at me in the car because she wanted another one, and kept repeating, “I have two Mommy, I have two Mommy!” But luckily, there were still two muffins left at school, so we grabbed one of those on the way to her classroom, and she was fine after that.

When I got to work, I had this delicious piece of chocolate java cake sitting on my desk, brought in from my co-worker. I ate half for breakfast with my coffee, and saved half for my afternoon snack. (Which I got too busy and forgot to eat it.)

The second “thing” of the day was lunch with my work friends, in honor of Toni’s birthday. We walked from our office building down to Cascades Park, with plans to eat at The Edison. But they’re not open for lunch on the weekdays! So instead we went downstairs the The Power Plant Cafe, and had a much more chill lunch. It was good, but expensive for what it was. But we sat outside in the breeze and chatted and laughed and had a good time. I also splurged and got a large iced chai latte, and it was yummy.

Heather was dressed us as the rocker Pink for Halloween today, complete with pink hair (obviously), and a whole outfit & heels. She was brave and even walked the few blocks in her heels too. BUT! I love the way our photo turned out, especially with the ray of sunshine beaming down on us!

The third “thing” of the day was a flu shot for the tiny Tater Tot. So I left work early, drove to pick her up, and then headed back to our pediatrician’s office, for the 3rd time in a week (last Friday with the triplets, Monday morning, and today). Since she tested negative for flu twice this past week while she was sick, we definitely wanted to keep this pre-scheduled appointment for the shot today (scheduled a couple weeks back), in hopes that if she truly didn’t have it before, that she wouldn’t get it after this. We were in and out of there in no time flat, and she did pretty well with the shot itself. (In the waiting room, she was showing these two teenage boys her cat ears, and the dogs in her magazine, and they were both really nice to her. It was sweet.)

The fourth “thing” of the day was a quick stop at Nana’s office building, so she could see the baby girl for a quick minute or two. (No photo for that.)

The fifth “thing” of the day was trick or treating at Grammy’s office. They set up special “zones” all over their building, and encourage everyone to bring their children & grandchildren to come to the office from 4-5pm. And Emmie had a blast!

After about 10 minutes in her unicorn costume, she got tired of wearing it and got hot, so she had to take it off. She was a little wary of this at first, but then she understood she could get candy from it, so she was brave and went for it.

The sixth “thing” was poor little Pretzel’s appointment back at the vet. He had an abscessed tooth that needed to be pulled, so Jeff dropped him off there super early this morning, the put him to sleep, and then pulled the tooth. And then they found a second tooth they had to pull too. Poor little boy. Jeff went back this afternoon to pick him up, and the poor boy was still pitiful, and drugged up and drowsy… (What I didn’t even realize then, was that Jeff took off at lunch, because he has so many hours banked up from the conferences, and he also went to two of his side businesses to check on stuff, before getting Pretzel.)

She was worried about the little band-aid on Pretzel’s leg (it was from his IV), so she had to take her pants off, and she said, “See, I have a bandaid too, Pretzel!”

We all had a few samples of her candy while we’re waited to see if it was going to rain all night…

And finally the last and seventh “thing” of the day was the fall festival at Northwoods Baptist Church! Since we missed the events at Bradfordville (our church) and Generations (Megan’s church) when she was sick over the weekend, I searched and found this one over on our side of town for tonight. We did all the trunks and a few of the games, but she got really upset when she wasn’t big enough for the giant blow-up bouncy house/slide.

She got so excited to see the “Doo Doo shark!”

And she loved giving him a “high fin.”

She shed the unicorn again before it was all over, and she refused to put it on again for a family photo…

Well, we did end up doing one more thing on the way home – cheeseburgers for dinner at DQ. And she wanted to wear her costume inside one more time, so we took another family photo, this time with a baby unicorn.

She wanted to wear the same clothes to bed, and I can’t say I blame her, since those are the softest pants ever, and her t-shirt was comfy anyways. She made herself a tiny, very thin pallet in the floor with one lovey, while I read just one book.

She kept trying to stall and bounce around, but we finally calmed her down enough to let me hold her. We listened to our lullabies tonight, but I couldn’t sing along. I’m still not feeling very well (in fact I might be getting worse), so my voice is all scratchy and raspy and I couldn’t sing. She was perfectly fine after our three songs, and she’s laying calm and quiet in her bed.

As you can probably imagine, all four of us (including the dog), are just completely exhausted after today! I’m going to chug cold OJ & hot tea again tonight, followed by a chaser of night-time cough syrup.
