I got up and took Emerson to school just like any regular Friday… And she was super excited to wear her bathing suit under her clothes for water day!
Today was National Donut Day, so while I was taking Emmie to school, Jeff was going to Donut Kingdom to get us some special treats! We splurged on the box of dozen, so we wouldn’t have to cook breakfast for a few days…
…because we started on a project today – we’re finally re-doing our kitchen cabinets! We kept calling it “demo day,” even though we weren’t actually “demo-ing” anything, it just felt right 🙂 So here are the “before” photos.
I chose a “Happy Pop Classics” station on Google Play for our work day tunes, and it immediately started up with *NSYNC, and only got better from there! It was great!
And I loved these photos of Emmie playing in the water with all her sweet little friends!
TWENTY-SIX cabinet doors and six drawers. Wow, it’s a LOT.
But of course they day wouldn’t have been complete without a mid-project trip to Home Depot, right?!
I’m loving this color palette!
And taking all the doors off made me realize I’m very glad we don’t have open shelving. I’m not minimalist enough for that look! haha
Oh, and in the middle of all we’ve got going on, Jeff’s car batter appears to be dead. So he had to literally push it out of the carport today, while I sat in the driver’s seat ready to hit the brake & pull the e-brake on at the right time. Ugh, not looking forward to dealing with that now too…
And let me just tell you guys – sanding 26 cabinet doors, that were made in literally 1963 and covered in all the grime and stain from the past 55+ years, takes a looooong time. (We ended up going over to Jeff’s parents’ house, to borrow their two sanders, so we could both sand at the same time.)
And while we’re slaving away at home, Grammy surprised Emerson by picking her up at school, and taking her back to their house for a sleepover!
We bought an 8-pack of Powerade at Home Depot today, which was a treat because we don’t normally keep any drinks in the house other than milk and water. But I poured it over ice in my small Tervis from work, and stuck a blue straw in it, and not only is it delicious, but it actually looks fun and color-coordinated, and I’ve been slurping it down non-stop out in this crazy heat!
We ate some sandwiches for dinner, and rested in the living room and the a/c for about an hour watching YouTube, and then forced ourselves to get up and keep working.
We worked for about 1.5 hours before I came inside to write this blog post really quickly, and by this point, I think we’re finally nearing the end of the sanding. Jeff has also been filling up the old hardware holes with wood-filler as we sanded each door, so that will all dry overnight, and be ready for a couple coats of primer first thing in the morning!
Honestly, by the time we do alllll the things (sand the doors, putty & sand again, clean the doors, lightly sand the cabinet faces, put two coats of primer on everything, and one coat of paint on everything, replace all the hardware, and re-hang everything), I feel like it will legit take us like two to three weeks. I know that sounds crazy, but I’m setting the time-line long, so that I’m not pulling my hair out with how long it takes, and might even end up pleasantly surprised if it takes less time than that.
We’re calling it quit outside now, even though we didn’t quite get all the doors sanded. But it’s after 9pm, and those guys are loud, and we don’t want our neighbors mad at us. I think Jeff wants to fill the holes on the cabinets inside, so we’ll try to finish up that before finally showering, and then crashing into bed!
