Last night around 10:30pm, right as Jeff and I were getting ready to go to bed, Emerson woke up whining and crying again. Jeff went to pick her up, but she wanted Mommy, so I grabbed her. She was really upset, but we didn’t know what she wanted. I needed to make a bathroom trip really fast, so we laid her in our bed. After that, she got super mad and wouldn’t let either of us hold her, and kept yelling NO every time we asked her something (i.e. – do you want water? do you want mommy? do you want lullabies?) So we just had to keep trying to figure it out.
Jeff carried her to the living room, and she asked for me, so I took her and sat down on the couch, and she almost instantly calmed down. We sat there for about 10-15 minutes, and finally she said yes when I asked if we could try lullabies & go night-night. We did our usual 3 songs, then “Jesus Loves Me” while I scratched her back, and about an hour after she first woke up, she was finally back asleep.
We’re not really sure what caused all of that, but we were worried for a bit there, that we wouldn’t be able to get her back to sleep, or that I would have to sleep sitting up on the couch all night! She slept fine after that, and slept until about 7:30 this morning. Then her and I both got dressed, and I took her to the doctor’s office, since she’s had a fever for three days now. Her ears were clear, and her rapid flu & strep tests were fine. They said he lungs sounded fine too.
While waiting the 20 minutes for the flu/strep results, we watched “Buster the Bus” for a little bit, but then she turned her head away and took a quick snooze on Mommy. She never does this anymore (she rarely ever did it when she was tiny), so I know she must have been feeling bad for her to fall asleep on me out in a public place, with bright lights & other kids crying in nearby rooms…
Since ears, strep & flu were all negative, but she had had some super high fevers over the weekend (remember, her highest was 106!), they wanted to test her for a UTI, since those can cause high fevers, and Emmie had also complained multiple times that her tummy hurt. So if you have a little baby or toddler girl that’s not potty trained, you’ve maybe done this before, but wow it was new to me and tricky. They attached a little plastic bag to her tiny private parts & sent us home. It was supposed to catch her urine sample, then I was going to put the bag in a cup they provided & drive it back later. So we went home to play for a bit…
But there was a leak in the bag and it just went all in her diaper, so we didn’t get a sample. Instead, we had to drive back over there for them to attach a new bag on her, so we could try again… While at home though, Grandmommie drove over to come to our house & be with us, so she went back to the doctor’s office with us. We kept her awake once we got home, and pushed, pushed, pushed her to drink plenty of ginger ale, apple juice or water, whatever she wanted. We read books, and we finally got her to eat some food (she skipped dinner last night & breakfast this morning), when I made her scrambled eggs and bread & butter. Grandmommie helped her eat, and she ate quite a bit.
I heated up my leftovers from last night, and ate my lunch at home too.
Then we played a little, and kept reminding her to drink every few minutes, while still waiting on her urine sample and asking her if she had gone pee-pee yet… We also had very big girl conversations about the more water she drinks, the sooner she’ll go pee-pee, and the sooner we can get that weird bag out of her diaper…
And then finally right after that last photo above, she was squatting down and was so excited to announce, “I got pee-pee!” So we were also excited with her, and we had her carefully walk back to the back so we could check on it. And lo & behold, there was urine in the bag just like there was supposed to be, and I very carefully put it in the container to take to the doctor. Anyways, all that info to say (sorry if it was all just TMI), urine samples for UTI tests for not-yet-potty-trained little girls are a whole thing.
I then took the sample back to the doctor’s office, and they did a quick test while I waited in the lobby. And praise the lord it was negative. So this just means all her symptoms and sickness is just from a nasty virus, and there’s nothing to be done but let it run it’s course. That’s the hardest part, but at least it’s nothing more serious. After the doctor’s office, I went in to work, to get at least a half day in…
Grandmommie stayed at our house with Emmie, and got her down for a nap. She slept for about 1 hour & 45 minutes, and then had a snack and played once she woke up.I worked until 5pm like usual, and came straight home. Grandmommie had to head out right away to go to a meeting at the church, so I got some more Emmie loves.
But then when Daddy got home, she wanted to hold him while I cooked dinner. After we had the Cincinnati chili last month, I froze a large portion of leftovers. I took it out last night to thaw, so tonight all I had to do was microwave the sauce & boil spaghetti noodles, for the quickest, easiest meal ever. In just the 20 minutes it took to finish that, Emmie fell asleep on Daddy’s chest, so I fixed only one bowl for myself.
We watched a few episodes of FRIENDS (super quiet with the captions on, which is nothing new, we love captions), while I ate and Daddy held Emerson. She ended up sleeping on him for about 1 hour 45 minutes, and slowly woke up near 7:45.
At first, she didn’t want anything but to lay there still – no drinks or snacks or Mommy. But once she woke up more, she let Mommy hold her, and she ate some Chex Mix and ginger ale. She’s been playful and silly and super happy since she woke up. It’s like she took a nap and woke up ready to go! So we’re going to keep her up for a while longer, and hopefully she’ll tire herself out and we can get her to bed later, just much later than usual.
On a random note, I wanted to share photos of past years of Trunk or Treats, because 2018’s photos popped up in today’s memories, and I’m still sad we didn’t get to go last night! (From 2015-2018, my mom & I were in charge of the entire event. We took a step back this year, for a few reasons, but one of those was so that we could just bring Emerson and participate with her, rather than running around coordinating everything. So we didn’t even get to do that this year, since she was so sick.)
Photo collage below: Top left – 2014, Hawaiian theme. Top middle – 2015, we set up our camping tent and built a cute (fake) fire, that you can’t see in this photo. Top right – 2016, penguin & igloo theme. Bottom left – 2017, Superman, Supergirl & Superbaby in the city of Metropolis. Bottom middle & right – 2018, Harry Potter theme, with our tiny Hedwig who hated wearing the costume we hand-made for her.
Those last few years we loved coming up with and designing our trunk themes, and it was always so fun handing out candy to all the cute kids in their fun costumes. We missed it this year. We’re actually thinking about attending another church’s trunk or treat even on Thursday night, if Emerson is feeling better by then, so that she can experience it this year!
We’re currently all watching “Moana” on the couch, with her chatting and talking to us and Pretzel and, hiding in and playing with all the couch pillows.
When she was sleeping on Jeff earlier, we didn’t know if we should just lay her in her crib, or try to wake her up. We never really decided, but she woke up and made the decision for us. But now she’s all wired and crazy, and so we’re just hoping & praying we can still get her back to sleep in a little bit!
10pm update – we went through our normal bedtime routine of books, prayers, lullabies, just two hours late, and I was able to lay her in the crib around 9:55pm. Praying she sleeps through the night!
