Mid-Century Modern

This morning, I met up with my sister and some of our girl friends from our church book club, for a little book club brunch at The Flying Biscuit. I had the classic eggs Benedict, and it was absolutely delicious, as were the “creamy dreamy grits” on the side.

And Jeff and the girls had themselves a little daddy/daughter breakfast at Country Kitchen up on the north side of town.

After I finished my breakfast, I ran into Home Goods and TJ Maxx, but didn’t buy anything at either place. Then I went up to downtown Havana, and first went to Rooster Roasters for another coffee for me, and I got one for Jeff too, while waiting on Jeff and the girls to come meet me after their breakfast.

Next, we all went next door to Bernard’s Hidden Treasures, which is a humongous old building just bursting at the seams with treasures indeed. Last week, Nana went shopping and spotted this table there, and sent me a picture. She knows I’ve been searching for a “new” replacement for our dining room table, that’s more in the mid-century modern style, to go with our 1960’s house. I love this style, and absolutely loved the chairs! And she’s going to help us update the upholstery too, which she claims will be easy.

So we borrowed Nana’s much-larger-than-ours SUV, and were able to fit the table, with the legs off, the two small leaves, and four of the chairs into her car. And then we put the last two chairs in my car. Unfortunately, we think there should have actually been eight chairs originally, but must have gotten lost, sold, or broken somewhere along the way…

So we don’t give in two cars to get it all home, and moved the old table out, and moved the new table in (and WOW that was a lot of work, lugging all that heavy wood furniture around in the 90-degree weather), but we just left it there like this temporarily to head back up to Havana. We left my car at home, and drove Nana’s car back to Havana,since Jeff had left his car at their house earlier.

We went back to downtown Havana to have a late lunch at Sist3r Chicks. This was our first time here, but I loved it. I ordered the Peppered Rooster, and it was one of my favorite sandwiches I’ve had in a while, and I have had plenty of sandwiches in my life!

And then we just so happened to stumble upon a very cute unmapped Little Free Library right downtown, made out of an old mini-fridge. And I found two books that wanted to come home withe me 🙂

We returned Nana’s SUV to her, and then headed back home to our house. Jeff and I worked together to get the legs back on the table, and put the leaves in, and then set the chairs around. We will need to do a light refinishing on the top, but we decided to just set it up for now, and we’ll get around to that in a few weeks or so. But for now, she’s all set up and looking gorgeous! I especially love the shape of the chair-backs, and that bit of rattan in the center. I also love that we found something truly vintage, and second-hand, that’s real, solid wood. It’s exactly the kind of piece I was always hoping to find. Glad I didn’t settle for something cheap from an online retailer or something, and that we now have this beautiful mid-century modern table!

Jeff went outside to mow the front yard, and the girls and I got to work cleaning up the living room. We actually deep-cleaned all the nooks and crannies around the living room too, that we usually just ignore and work around, and that was nice to get those things taken care of. (But whatever’s going on in the kitchen in the background is nobody’s business today, and that will be tackled tomorrow 😉 )

We grabbed some food from Snapper’s on Tharpe while Jeff finished up outside, and brought it home for dinner. After eating real quick, I got the girls into the shower, and then into fresh jammies. Then Jeff got a shower, and I put the girls to sleep. Both were totally exhausted and kept having little mini-meltdowns, but once I finally forced them to just lay down and take no more questions or thoughts, they fell asleep during the very first lullaby on the playlist.
