Surgery Day

Today has been a bit of strange day… Jeff encountered some crazy traffic while taking the girls to school, and they had to flip-flop the order and take Emmie first instead of Addie like usual, but they did eventually make it.

This girl was killing me this morning, with those tiny little shorts, and her big sparkly boots. So cute though! And she requested a hair bun and a clip today, which turned out really cute.

Mama and I met up at Uptown Cafe for breakfast together this morning. I got their breakfast burrito with black beans and bacon, and it was really delicious. It’s one of my favorite things on their menu. Her and I were glad for the time we had together, and we had good conversations, but we were also a little out of sorts…

Because today was Megan’s cancer surgery day. Luckily, Mama and I were allowed to go there with them, so we spent about four hours there in the waiting room, mostly with Bo. Again, we had lots of good conversations, and used humor plenty of times to deal with all the hard, heavy feelings of the day. I tried to read for a little bit, but only made it about six pages the whole time, since we were just chatting and on our phones most of the time.

The surgeon came out and talked with Bo, and she said everything went exactly according to plan, with no surprises, which is a good thing obviously! They even took a picture of it, because Meg said she wanted to see it 🤣 We were able to see her once she got out of recovery and chat with her for a few minutes, but she was of course still very sleepy and doped up on the anesthesia.

Around mid-day when she was discharged, Mama picked up some lunch for them, and then went home with them to help out with all the kids and dinner and bedtime and all of those things tonight. I had some time to kill, so I hit up a few new Little Free Library’s over on that side of town that we’ve never visited before. I found a few books for me, and a few for Emerson, and left a few that we cleaned out from our collection at home this past weekend.

For a mid-afternoon snack, I got an iced pistachio latte from Starbucks using a gift card, and then picked up a Chick-fil-A sandwich using rewards points in my app. So my whole “lunch” was free today.

Around 3:30, I was able to pick up both girls, and luckily I had this bag of chips in the car Grammy had given me, because they were starving.

We had to go down to the LCS offices to turn in my chaperone application for a background check, and get fingerprinted, so the girlies came with me. Addie kept trying to jump up and touch the string for the light, and she was barely getting off the ground. Emmie and I were laughing at her so much. Emmie was actually able to reach it though!

We made it back home before 5pm, and the girls had lots of playtime, and I just had some time to decompress.  To go from a chaotic morning, to breakfast, to the surgery center for hours, and then chaos with the girls again… Like I said earlier, it was just a strange day.

Look at this beautiful picture Jeff took on his way home from work!

We ate dinner and watched “The Sword in the Stone,” then I got the girls in the bath while Jeff cleaned up the leftovers and such. Emmie wanted some hot tea and banana bread, so I fixed that for her. When it was ready and she took her first sip, she literally closed her eyes and moaned “mmmmm,” then said, “It’s not too minty, and not too sweet, it’s perfect.” (Which reminded me of “it’s not too hot, and not too cold, all you need is a light jacket.” IYKYK.)

They were a little wound up again at bedtime, so it took a while to settle them down once we got them into bed. We went through the whole playlist again tonight, with a repeat of the last song, and then they were finally asleep. I need to wash some dishes, but I’m not gonna do that; I’m just gonna ignore my chores for the night, and watch tv instead…

Thank y’all so much for all of your prayers and texts and messages to me and my mom and our family today. Megan was able to eat some lunch this afternoon, and was in and out of that post-anesthesia sleep for most of the day. She’s got some pain she’s dealing with, so hopefully she’ll sleep well and get some relief from that tonight.
