LDW 2025 – Magical Path & A Sunset

{Over Labor Day Weekend, we took a mini family vacay to St. Simon’s Island. This is the post for Day 2, Sunday, 8/31/25.}

The girls actually slept in until 8am on Sunday morning, so it was late before we actually got ready and out the door. My parents had recommended Dulce Donuts so we went there, and had to wait in line for 45 minutes! But it was totally worth the wait, for the best raspberry filled donut I’ve ever had in my life.

After breakfast, we just set out to explore and see what we could find. We visited a couple different public beach access points, and got a little taste of the sand and salt air. But it was crazy windy, and the water was choppy, so we just played in the sand in our clothes, but didn’t swim.

We just happened to see a Little Free Library while roaming the fancy beach neighborhoods, and I lucked out finding two books that are actually on my TBR (to-be-read) list.

The neighborhood streets were kind of a grid, so we were just driving up and down, exploring and seeing all the beautiful, unique homes, really enjoying everything. Then we just happened upon the most magical beach access path, winding down a sandy trail through all the vines and live oak limbs, with the sun rays piercing through the canopy. Absolutely magical!

OK and then we found this adorable little coffee shop / deli called the Cottage, with this awesome castle-style playground attached to the side, with astro turf and tables and chairs. So we got some drinks for us, and just let the girls play forever, and more kids came up, and they had so much fun.

The lady working there recommended a very near-by lunch place for us, The Beachcomber, with simple sandwiches and burgers, and a nice outdoor patio. Each sandwich came with two sides, so we just got two meals and shared everything with the girls, and it was more than enough food for all of us.

We went back to change clothes, and then attempted to swim in the hotel pool, but it had been gray and misty for two days, so the water was pretty chilly. I never actually got in, but just sat reading while the girls tried to tough it out, but they only lasted about 20 minutes before they were shivering and chattering and we forced them out.

Instead, they swam around in the warm bathtub back in our room for a bit, and then we all got bathed/showered & changed into new clothes, to go back out shopping and exploring. We visited an adorable local book shop, and we all picked out one book to purchase.

Then we drove around just exploring another neighborhood with cute houses, and happened to find yet another Little Free Library, or as Addie calls them, “Little House Li-berries.”

We wandered around the downtown again for a while, and let the girls get some Jelly Beans at the candy store, before moseying our way off to dinner. We chose to go to Mullet Bay near the downtown, and they also had a great outdoor patio with a live band.

If any of you Tally Folks remember Old Town Cafe, that used to be on Timberlane Road in Market Square, our family loved that place. And I personally was obsessed with their mahi mahi Caesar salad, and have never been able to find another like it since they closed. I asked this restaurant if they could add blackened mahi to their Caesar and they were happy to do so, and I asked for lots of lemons to go with it, and it was sooo good!

It was a little past 7pm by the time we left dinner, so we raced back to Epworth by the Sea so we could sit down by the water and watch the sunset. We got there in perfect timing, and it was absolutely gorgeous! The weather was perfect and the sky was beautiful, and the girls had a great time running around in the soft grass playing, while we sat on a nearby bench just watching them play and listening to them giggle.

We did get them back into bed a little bit earlier this night, and then somehow, I was wide awake enough to read for a long time, and ended up finishing the first book in “The Summer I Turned Pretty” series.
